Utility Maintenance Technician II

About the role

The Utility Maintenance Technician II is a full-time, on-site role working primarily within Public Works and utilities infrastructure. This position involves reading meters and performing a variety of tasks—individually and as part of a crew—to operate and maintain collection and distribution systems. Work includes installation, replacement, and repair of water and sewer pipes, making taps to mains, installing hydrants, meters, and valves, and repairing system components.

Employees work in diverse environments, including extreme weather, confined spaces, heights, and exposure to hazards such as loud noises, chemicals, fumes, and poor ventilation. The role requires compliance with OSHA standards, including bloodborne pathogens, and may require wearing a respirator. Rotating standby/recall work is mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Read meters and perform maintenance on water and sewer collection/distribution systems.
• Install, replace, and repair water and sewer pipes to specified grade and depth.
• Make taps to water and sewer mains; install hydrants, meters, and valves.
• Perform repairs on water and sewer systems.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Adhere to safety and environmental regulations, including OSHA standards.
• Participate in rotating standby/recall and after-hours response as needed.
• Operate and maintain utility-related tools and equipment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certifications in utility, mechanical, or industrial maintenance preferred.
• Basic knowledge of water and sewer system operations, utility safety practices, and relevant tools.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in varying weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Willingness to participate in on-call or after-hours response.
