Lake Superior Consulting is seeking a Utility Locate Lead to join our team!

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced locator to step into a leadership role supporting the day-to-day operations of our utility locating and leak detection services. As a Utility Locate Lead, you’ll work hands-on in the field while mentoring and supporting technicians to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency across all projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support field technicians to complete locate requests safely, accurately, and within required timelines.
  • Perform underground utility locates using electronic locating equipment and APWA color standards.
  • Read and interpret utility maps and prints to identify underground facilities.
  • Aid in training, mentoring, and developing new and existing team members.
  • Cook up daily workload and priorities with the Utility Supervisor and field staff.
  • Complete documentation for locates, crossings, and excavation projects accurately and on time.
  • Participate in safety meetings, audits, and operational reviews.
  • Promote a strong safety and quality culture throughout all field activities.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, clients, and coworkers to ensure efficient operations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and ensure equipment readiness for field projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
  • 2–3 years of utility locating experience (required).
  • Strong knowledge of utility locating methods, equipment, and industry standards.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to working safely and providing high-quality service.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to operate a company vehicle.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Availability to travel and participate in on-call rotations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment and traverse rugged terrain.
  • Frequent standing and walking; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, precipitation).
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations for extended periods as needed.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when project schedules require.

Compensation

The actual starting salary will be determined based on a variety of factors, including your skills, experience, and office/market location. The anticipated salary/hourly range for this position is $25-$29/hr.
