Lake Superior Consulting is seeking a Utility Locate Lead to join our team!
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced locator to step into a leadership role supporting the day-to-day operations of our utility locating and leak detection services. As a Utility Locate Lead, you’ll work hands-on in the field while mentoring and supporting technicians to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency across all projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support field technicians to complete locate requests safely, accurately, and within required timelines.
- Perform underground utility locates using electronic locating equipment and APWA color standards.
- Read and interpret utility maps and prints to identify underground facilities.
- Aid in training, mentoring, and developing new and existing team members.
- Cook up daily workload and priorities with the Utility Supervisor and field staff.
- Complete documentation for locates, crossings, and excavation projects accurately and on time.
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and operational reviews.
- Promote a strong safety and quality culture throughout all field activities.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, clients, and coworkers to ensure efficient operations.
- Participate in on-call rotations and ensure equipment readiness for field projects.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- 2–3 years of utility locating experience (required).
- Strong knowledge of utility locating methods, equipment, and industry standards.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to working safely and providing high-quality service.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to operate a company vehicle.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Availability to travel and participate in on-call rotations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment and traverse rugged terrain.
- Frequent standing and walking; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, precipitation).
- Ability to travel to offsite locations for extended periods as needed.
- Willingness to work extended hours when project schedules require.

Compensation
The actual starting salary will be determined based on a variety of factors, including your skills, experience, and office/market location. The anticipated salary/hourly range for this position is $25-$29/hr.
