Utility Coordinator (Principal Engineering Technician) - Street Transportation Department

About This Position

Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the country, serving as Arizona's center of government, commerce, and culture. It is emerging in the new economy with strength in high technology, manufacturing, bioscience research and advanced business services. The Street Transportation Department, Utility Coordination section, is seeking a Utility Coordinator (Principal Engineering Technician) to perform difficult, complex, and technical paraprofessional engineering duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of various levels of engineering technicians who review dry utility plans, proposing installation in City rights of way (ROW) in accordance with department policy.
  • Perform utility coordination duties for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) including paving, storm drain, streetlights, sidewalk, water, and sewer.
  • Interpret GIS maps, digital maps, and civil engineering plans or drawings.
  • Create and manipulate data to create reports using Microsoft Excel.
  • Provide seamless customer service with a willingness to assist internal and external customers daily.
  • Work cooperatively and meet regularly with operating staff, engineering staff, consultants, and contractors to discuss utility asset management principles and requirements.

Requirements

  • Six years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work, including three years of paraprofessional civil engineering experience (or one year of experience at the level of Chief Engineering Technician, or Chief Drafting Technician).
  • Four years of experience reading, reviewing, and interpreting civil engineering and dry utility plans.
  • Three years of experience creating reports and documents using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Three years of experience that displays a demonstrated ability to work with strict deadlines.
  • Two years of experience managing, supervising, or leading a team.
  • Two years of experience coordinating or managing capital improvement projects (CIP).
  • Experience utilizing electronic permitting systems.
  • Experience with city codes and GIS systems.
  • Experience compiling and analyzing data.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service while working in a team environment.
  • Experience serving as a liaison to internal city departments, development community, contractors, vendors and the general public.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge Of Principles and practices of engineering as applied to the installation of dry utilities in the City's Right-of-Way (ROW) and Capital Improvement Project (CIP) construction.
  • Spreadsheet creation, tracking and outlook scheduling.
  • Underground utility construction with demonstrated ability to communicate with project managers, city contractors, and utility contractors.

Skills

  • Ability To Interpret GIS maps, digital maps, and civil engineering plans or drawings.
  • Ability To Extract and manipulate data to create reports using Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability To Provide seamless customer service with a willingness to assist internal and external customers daily.
  • Ability To Work cooperatively and meet regularly with operating staff, engineering staff, consultants, and contractors to discuss utility asset management principles and requirements.

Pay

Pay Range: $69,201.60 to $112,715.20 annually. Hiring Range: $69,201.60 to $107,348.80 annually. Pay Range Explanation Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
