Day-to-day responsibilities
- Coordinate with utility owners (PG&E, AT&T, Comcast, municipal water/sewer districts, and others) to identify existing utility facilities within project limits and resolve conflicts.
- Manage the utility relocation and protect-in-place process from potholing and design through construction verification.
- Review project plans and specifications to identify potential utility conflicts; develop and maintain utility conflict matrices and tracking logs.
- Facilitate utility coordination meetings and maintain communication with all stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Process and track utility agreements, permits, and reimbursement documentation in accordance with Caltrans utility procedures and agency requirements.
- Cover Joint Trench activities and verify utility installation meets project requirements and specifications.
- Review and process USA (Underground Service Alert) tickets and ensure compliance with California Government Code Section 4216.
- Support project managers and construction managers with utility-related schedule analysis and risk assessment.
- Maintain detailed utility coordination records and prepare status reports for agency stakeholders.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in utility coordination on public works or transportation infrastructure projects in California.
- Strong working knowledge of Caltrans Right of Way and utility relocation procedures.
- Familiarity with major Bay Area utility owners and their relocation/coordination processes.
- Understanding of California Government Code Section 4216 (USA/dig alert) requirements.
- Able to read and interpret civil engineering plans, utility plans, and as-builts.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, GIS/mapping tools, and project tracking software.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Planning, or related field preferred.
- Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation.
