About the role

This position involves skilled labor work in maintaining, cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and replacing the City’s sanitary and sanitary combined sewer collection systems infrastructure. Employees may act as lead workers and operate construction equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Installs concrete forms and pours back pavement, and constructs poured-in-place or precast sewer structures up to 30 ft deep.
  • Repairs city sewer lines by digging trenches, shaping rock bedding, cutting pipe, and replacing damaged pipe using couplings.
  • Repairs and replaces gravity and pressurized sewer main and sewer service lines consisting of VCP, RCP, CMP, brick, clay tile, PVC, cast iron, concrete, cast, and ductile iron pipe ranging from 2’’ to 144’’ diameter.
  • Operates and maintains hydro excavation equipment.
  • Replaces manhole covers and rings, and repairs sewer inlets, manhole bodies, and surrounding surfaces, including cutting and breaking up cement or asphalt, loading broken pieces into trucks, cleaning areas to be repaired and measuring, pouring concrete, and performing finish work.
  • Operates and maintains pumping equipment for dewatering and sewer bypassing.
  • Maintains, clears, and applies chemicals to grass, shrubs, and trees for equipment and structure accessibility.
  • Picks up, loads, and removes debris from streets and sidewalks after storms.
  • Reviews maps and locates manholes, piping, and other collection system structures for preparation of work.
  • Uses current sewer mapping, magnetic locator, underground electronic line locating equipment, and current third-party utility locating system to find and mark sewer manholes, pipe and structure locations, and lines in the field.
  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of construction, sewer construction, sewer cleaning related experience, or a combination of any, with a minimum of one (1) year sewer construction experience.
  • High school graduation or its equivalent is preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial driver’s license with N endorsement and no air brake restrictions at the time of appointment or a Class A Commercial driver’s license with N endorsement and O restriction by the end of the probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications by the end of probation period: Second Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineer’s Certificate, Confined Space Entry, Work Zone Traffic Control, Competent Person Shoring and Trench Safety, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification, Snow Plow Training Certification, Forklift Operator’s Certificate, City of Omaha Sewer Layer Certificate.
  • Must be available to work on-call and after hours to respond to emergency situations as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of general construction, pipe repair, manhole structures, and wastewater collection systems.
  • Knowledge of forming, pouring, and finishing concrete sewer structures and pavement.
  • Knowledge of shoring and excavation safety up to 30 feet in depth.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry and safe practices as defined by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment, including pneumatic pipe plugs.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City of Omaha.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting current City of Omaha standard construction specifications and standard plates.
  • Skill in the safe operation and maintenance of supplied air equipment, concrete cutting equipment, and construction equipment.
  • Skill in reading and understanding street maps and quarter section maps to determine the placement of pavement markings and the location of sewer collection components.
  • Ability to fit into a 24in wide manhole structure and utilize a ladder or confined space entry equipment to enter and exit structures.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as manholes and/or trench depending on the assigned division.
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment and be pulmonary and fit tested for safe use.
  • Ability to learn and understand Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) rules for Work Zone Safety and Temporary Traffic Control.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to learn and operate a computer, laptop, or tablet to retrieve, compile, and enter data into appropriate applications and programs.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees, members of the public, and contractors and their agents.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
