About the role

This is a full-time, permanent, safety-sensitive Construction Inspector position in Utility Operations within the Department of Public Works. The role involves technical field inspection of sewage pumping stations, force mains, low-pressure sewer systems, water mains and systems, and patch paving contracts.

Work is performed independently with technical judgment and discretion, though consultation with a superior is required for difficult or unusual cases. The position may provide guidance and direction to subordinate construction inspectors.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect a wide variety of contract and force-account construction projects (roads, storm drains, water and sewer services, subdivisions, and other public works and utility construction) to ensure adherence to specifications and standards.
  • Provide guidance and direction to subordinate inspectors; periodically inspect assigned jobs to ensure compliance with specifications, regulations, workmanship, and materials.
  • Review and check blueprints, plans, and sketches for proposed construction, alteration, or repair; recommend changes and improvements.
  • Confer with contractors, engineers, property owners, and other parties to explain and interpret construction codes, regulations, and specifications; approve minor field changes.
  • Coordinate efforts of private and public utility adjustments and installations during projects.
  • Inspect residential building permits, short-form public works agreements, and minor subdivisions.
  • Transport, operate, and maintain equipment designed to measure, check tolerances, photograph, and designate problem areas at construction sites.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports.

Positions in this class require lifting or causing to be lifted tools, machinery, and equipment weighing from one to one thousand pounds.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or vocational school.
  • Two or more years of technical and trades experience in a variety of construction work, including inspections.
  • Valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

This position is safety-sensitive; employees are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the installation and inspection of water systems, gravity and pressure sewer systems, pumping stations, and grinder pumps.
