About the role

The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is seeking an experienced Utilities Water Field Helper to join the Water Division. This position assists journey level workers in the construction and maintenance of the water distribution systems.

Responsibilities

  • Work with and assist journey level workers in the cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, cleaning and flushing of water mains.
  • Work with and assist journey level workers in the installation, maintenance and repair of services, valves and hydrants.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools, cleaning and performing minor maintenance to such tools.
  • Operate a truck; perform minor servicing to truck and report mechanical or other problems; keep truck supplied with materials and supplies.
  • Aid in setting up traffic and pedestrian controls at work sites.

Requirements

  • Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
  • Experience: Six months experience in heavy manual work, preferably in water system construction and maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of an appropriate, valid class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of a valid Class "A" California Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator's License with tank truck endorsement within twelve (12) months of appointment.

Benefits

The City offers an attractive benefits package including:

  • Retirement for Classic Members: 2.7% @ age 55; 3 year final compensation. Employee contribution is 8%.
  • Retirement for New Members: 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. Employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost.

  • Dental Insurance: Up to $55 per month.
  • Vision Insurance: Through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
  • Life Insurance: Term life insurance with accidental death and dismemberment up to $100,000 plus AD&D. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employee and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
  • Deferred Compensation: City contributes $75 per month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation is optional.
  • Leave Benefits: Includes vacation, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits.
  • Flexible Spending Account: Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
  • Long Term Disability: Optional enrollment in the Long-Term Disability Plan.
  • Short Term Disability: Employees are automatically enrolled in with The Standard Short-Term Disability Plan. The City contributes $25.60 per month and the employee pays the remainder portion of the premium.
  • LegalEase Plan: Optional legal services plan for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Critical Illness Plan: Optional critical illness insurance plan for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Vacation Accrual: 0-5 yrs. = 80 hrs., 6-10 yrs. = 120 hrs., 11+ yrs.=160 hrs.

The pay for this position is commensurate with experience.
