Essential Functions
- Perform a wide variety of maintenance activities including the location, maintenance and repair of water mains and breaks and sewer lines;
- Lay new lines;
- Dig down to repair main and lines breaks;
- Operate sewer jet, pumps, excavators, tampers, pipe saws, compressors, jack hammers and dump trucks;
- Check and perform minor maintenance to equipment;
- Operate sewer jet to clean sewer mains;
- Make sewer and water taps;
- Locate lines for contractors, other utilities and for the crew;
- Exercise valves;
- Repair or replace hydrants;
- May clean storm water catch basins;
- Replace water meters;
- Haul base materials to repair street cuts;
- Turn off delinquent payment customers;
- Assist in inspections and repair of manholes;
- Monitor for cross connections;
- Remove and replace pipe sections;
- Measure and replace valve fittings;
- Backfill excavation sites;
- Read meters;
- Install and replace meters, meter pits and remote reading devices;
- Check for leaks, turn water on and off;
- Take water samples for testing;
- Respond to complaints and maintain records;
- Check and turn valves and hydrants to assure proper function;
- Haul sand and materials;
- Remove snow;
- Assist in operation of the asphalt plant;
- Maintain and paint pedestrian tubes;
- Clean shop and restrooms;
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma, or equivalent;
- One year of experience in maintenance or construction work involving the use of light equipment and hand tools;
- Experience in water and sewer systems preferred;
- Ability to acquire Level I State Certification in Water Distribution and Sewer Collection Systems within one year of appointment;
- Must possess a valid Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement;
- Ability to serve on-call as assigned.

- Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair;
- Ability to become and maintain certification in water and sewer systems.
Work Environment
The essential functions require sustained periods of sitting and standing. The job requires frequent fine manipulations of occasional bending, stooping, twisting, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and repetitive motion, with the necessity to carry and lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to repair equipment and facilities, to operate light and medium equipment and a vehicle. Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, two-way radio, and email. Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, maps and gauges.
Sensory Requirements
Utilities Systems Worker I shall possess good written, oral and communication skills. Must possess the ability to communicate with others and speak effectively.
