Job Description

Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water and wastewater systems and may be assigned to a water, sewer, or construction team. Duties include installing and repairing water and wastewater lines and mains, repairing fire hydrants, water services, meters, and meter boxes, operating light and heavy equipment, locating sewer or water lines, installing new service taps, setting up specialized equipment, cleaning up work sites, flagging traffic at work sites, clearing hazardous debris from roadways, checking and repairing meter boxes and leaks, cleaning blockages from sewer mains, maintaining assigned vehicles and equipment, raising and lowering manholes, and responding to after-hours emergency situations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Installs and repairs water and wastewater lines and mains.
  • Repairs fire hydrants, water services, meters, and meter boxes.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Locates sewer or water lines.
  • Installs new service taps.
  • Set up of specialized equipment according to guidelines.
  • Cleans up of work sites and assists in the maintenance of the stations and grounds.
  • Flags traffic at work sites.
  • Clears hazardous debris from roadways.
  • Checks and repairs meter boxes and leaks.
  • Cleans blockages from sewer mains.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Raises and lowers manholes.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of 1 year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; Class A or B Commercial Driver's License preferred.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain an ODEQ Class D Water License within 6 months of employment is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert forceful physical effort in heavy work, typically involving some combination of balancing, crouching, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking and which involves some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds).
  • Must submit to a drug screening and fitness to work physical.

  • Retirement: The City offers a 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan through the Oklahoma Municipal Retirement Fund (OMRF). The City contributes 10% of the employees’ earnings into the plan.   • Vacation: One week of vacation is available after six months of employment. Thereafter, vacation is accrued monthly according to year of service. Procedure: Vacation leave cannot exceed the actual accrued number of hours earned by the employee. Holidays and other non-scheduled workdays shall not be computed in vacation leave expenditure. Each department establishes its own vacation scheduling procedures. Vacation cannot be used as the last day of employment.

  • Holidays: Twelve paid holidays, plus one floating holiday each year.

  • Sick: Eight hours per month up to a maximum of 1,040 hours (130 working days).

  • Life Insurance & Long-Term Disability: The City pays the entire premium for a term life insurance policy, as well as a long-term disability benefit that replaces part of your salary if you become unable to work for several months. The life insurance is equal to the employee’s annual salary.

  • Employee Assistance Program: Through Community Care EAP, City employees and their families can call for help with a variety of personal, professional, mental health, substance abuse and financial concerns. Three free visits are offered each year, with a reference for ongoing support if needed.
