Utilities Field Pipeline Technician*

About the role

The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities is seeking a qualified Utilities Pipeline Technician to install, maintain, and repair sewer/wastewater pipelines. The anticipated hiring range is $42,900 - $50,509.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, and replace sewer/wastewater pipes, valves, and other related equipment
• Once buried utilities are located by other utilities employees, guide equipment operators in the excavation of the site and begin work on pipeline
• Flag work-zone with necessary signage and cones to ensure safety of the public and other employees
• Drive commercial vehicles to and from job site transporting materials and equipment
• Stock truck with necessary supplies and maintain vehicle
• Correspond with citizens to explain necessary repairs and hear their concerns
• Utilize various hand tools and equipment such as picks, shovels, saws, wrenches, jackhammers, basin hooks, sewer corks, etc. to install and maintain sewer laterals, main lines, and manholes
• Assist with the stocking and upkeep of the crew truck
• Assist in the setting up of work-zones, closing of roads, and flagging to ensure the safety of public motorists and coworkers
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs to assure safe and proper operation of the City of Richmond Sanitary and Combined Sewer infrastructure
• Install Sanitary and Combined sewer piping and fittings
• Drive and operate small equipment and machinery
• Perform routine maintenance inspections of piping systems
• Respond to work orders
• Assemble tools, materials and equipment for daily work assignments
• Transport personnel to and from work sites
• Attend and receive necessary training on occasional basis

Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience: High School diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training; one year of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in the utilities and/or plumbing fields and one year of experience.

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements: Requires a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire.

Physical demands and work environment

Environmental Hazards: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

Physical Requirements: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, push, pull, lift, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms, talk, see, and hear. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, walk, feel and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
