Start your career with Pasco County Utilities as a Utilities Electrical/Mechanical Specialist Trainee. This entry-level position provides foundational training in the inspection, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Pasco County-owned well sites, potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water treatment facilities, and related equipment. The role offers a clear career path for advancement to higher-level Utilities Mechanical Specialist positions (I through IV) upon meeting certification, licensure, experience, and performance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in installations, modifications, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of water, wastewater collection and treatment, and reuse systems, including:
    • Motors (fractional to 500HP)
    • Motor-operated valves, check valves, altitude valves, control valves, air release valves, plug valves
    • Submersible pumps, vertical turbine pumps, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, close couple pumps, diaphragm pumps, piston pumps
    • Aeration blower equipment, mixers, mechanical bar screens, gear drives, compressed air systems
  • Operate equipment such as utility box/boom trucks to pull pumps, motors, and other equipment for maintenance, repair, or replacement.
  • Use and maintain hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, meters, and specialized test equipment for system maintenance.
  • Assist in identifying, troubleshooting, and correcting issues in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and conveyor systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment, pumping stations, wells, and reuse distribution equipment using the county’s Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) and spreadsheets.
  • Complete assigned daily work orders and assist with routine preventative maintenance.
  • Perform emergency repairs on water, wastewater, and reuse systems, including related equipment and facilities.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects, occasionally using handling devices or teamwork for heavier items.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida CDL Class "B" Permit within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, operations staff, and the public.
  • Ability to perform duties with considerable independence.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and perform maintenance work.
  • Proficiency in using computers and related software.

Physical Skills & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects, occasionally using handling devices or teamwork for excessively heavy objects.
  • Frequent bending, climbing, stooping, squatting, and walking.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods.
  • Must be available for overtime as required.
  • Work location may vary.
  • Ability to work outside, occasionally under adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
