About the role

The Utilities Distribution Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing critical infrastructure, including steam lines, chilled water lines, and other utilities, for the Virginia Tech Blacksburg Campus.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair steam lines, chilled water lines, and other utility systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting, repair, and installation of water, storm, sanitary sewer, steam, and heating hot water systems.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and line/service trucks.
  • Read and interpret construction documents and shop drawings.
  • Diagnose utility distribution system problems and perform repairs as required.
  • Layout and install pipefitting in compliance with applicable codes and construction documents.
  • Work independently or on a team to execute repairs or installations.
  • Maintain and lubricate mechanical equipment as needed.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Participate in emergency situations and authorized closings.

Requirements

  • Working skill in the use of diverse hand and power tools.
  • Commercial Driver’s License with Class B endorsements and DOT medical certification.
  • Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects.
  • Ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs, work from elevated workstations, stand, walk, sit, reach, bend, push/pull, and work in confined spaces.
  • Experience with operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, and forklifts.
  • Knowledge of steam distribution systems and commercial/industrial piping installation and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with handling utility locate requests and working around low and high-voltage areas.
  • Experience in a multi-trade, multi-disciplined environment.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated general construction experience.
  • General knowledge of using a computer to perform basic functions.
  • Experience at the journeyman level in general plumbing.
  • Previous experience in industrial, commercial, or institutional building plumbing.
  • Experience with operating equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, and forklifts.
  • Considerable knowledge of steam distribution systems.
  • Experience with commercial/industrial distributions.
  • Experience reading and interpreting written instructions, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
  • Some experience or knowledge of handling utility locate requests.
  • Familiarity with working around low and high-voltage areas to maintain and repair mechanical utilities systems.
  • Experience in a multi-trade, multi-disciplined environment.
  • Safety training including chain saw safety, confined space entry/attendant supervisor, electrical qualified person, excavation qualified person, fall hazard awareness, fall protection user, first aid/CPR/AED, hazcom RTK, hearing conservation, hotline hold tags, ladder safety, lockout/tagout authorized person, mobile crane safety, personal protective equipment training, portable fire extinguisher training, reverse signal operation safety, scaffold awareness, VDOT flagger training and certification, and VDOT work zone basic safety training.
