UTILITIES CREWLEADER

About the Role

This is a non-exempt position involving manual labor and supervisory work over a crew of skilled workers performing a variety of manual tasks. The employee is responsible for ensuring assigned tasks are performed properly and efficiently, maintaining work schedules, and serving as an at-will employee of the City.

Responsibilities

• Fill in for the crew Foreman in their absence.
• Lead worker in the repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems.
• Provide guidance and instruction to Utilities Service workers and Senior Service workers.
• Plan, lead, and assist in cleaning and inspections of gravity sanitary sewer/storm water lines.
• Maintain records and submit reports of work performed.
• Operate and maintain applicable tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
• Maintain cleanliness of work areas; remove debris as needed.
• Estimate material needs; procure materials, equipment, and supplies as needed.
• Operate heavy equipment.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
• Read and utilize drawings, maps, GIS, and utilities atlases.
• Schedule crews and personnel, and manage timekeeping.
• Perform "stand-by duty," being available and responding to off-duty emergency call-ins for repairs.
• Inspect work in progress, modify or adjust work schedules, and ensure project completion.
• Supervise and train crews in the field; resolve complaints; operate various types of equipment; perform maintenance tasks.
• Exercise care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
• Perform related work as required and directed.

Requirements

• Ability to operate a city vehicle and possess a Class B CDL with tanker endorsement.
• Considerable knowledge of radio transmitting equipment, meters, and service lines.
• Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in assigned work.
• Knowledge of occupational safety hazards and precautions.
• Proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word, ADP (Payroll), Hansen (work orders), and the City PGIS system.
• Knowledge of modern methods of personal supervision.
• Ability to deal with customers and provide customer support, including defusing aggressive situations.
• Ability to read and understand record drawings.
• Ability to comply with all State and local regulations regarding water distribution systems.
• Ability to multitask and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions and complete work assignments correctly.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with regulators and the public.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution systems, services, meters, sanitary sewer lines, and other Utilities infrastructure.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class B CDL with tanker endorsement).
• Must possess a Class B Water Distribution Operator license issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection or obtain one within two years of employment.

Work Environment

The work requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds constantly to move objects. The role involves balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling various objects.
