USGS Postdoctoral Wildlife Health Research Fellowship

About the role

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Bozeman, Montana, offers a research opportunity focusing on wildlife disease impacts in ungulates around the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on wildlife disease impacts in ungulates around the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
• Learn to develop and conduct research activities such as field-based data collection in diverse environmental conditions, preparation and processing of biological samples, and analysis of ecological data using statistical and modeling approaches in R.
• Gain hands-on experience with quantitative tools and their role in wildlife management and conservation decisions.
• Engage with biologists and natural resource professionals across agencies to broaden understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration and public-sector science.
• Participate in regular mentoring interactions to explore scientific concepts and professional development goals.

Requirements

• Received a doctoral degree in relevant fields within the last four years.
• Research experience within the fields of wildlife ecology and/or infectious disease dynamics outside of a lab setting.
• Previous experience organizing spatial data, animal tracking data, publishing scientific papers, using ArcPro, R programming, statistical analysis, and ecological field research.
• Analyzing animal movement/GPS-collar data, collaborating with natural resource agencies on wildlife management issues, analyzing disease surveillance data, and publishing peer-reviewed articles.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Environmental and Marine Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, or a related field.
• A minimum overall GPA of 3.20.

• Organizing spatial data, animal tracking data, and publishing scientific papers.

Benefits

Participants do not become employees of USGS, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Pay

$74,000.00 - $89,500.00 annually.

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for two years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DOI and is contingent on the availability of funds. The appointment is full-time.
