USGS Building Better Science Applications: User-Driven Front-End Design and Workflow Optimization

About the role

The USGS is seeking a participant to work on front-end design and user research across a suite of high-visibility science applications. Current efforts include modernization of the Breeding Bird Survey, Permitting Partner Portal, and SDARTT.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with USGS scientists and technical staff to understand how scientific workflows translate into data-driven tools and web applications.
  • Conduct user experience (UX) research, including interviewing, usability testing, workflow mapping, and synthesizing user needs.
  • Develop proficiency in modern front-end design tools such as Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and documenting design requirements.
  • Gain understanding of software development processes within a science agency, including agile workflows, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and integrating design research into application requirements.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or having received a bachelor's or master's degree in relevant fields such as Chemistry and Materials Sciences, Communications and Graphics Design, Computer, Information, and Data Sciences, Earth and Geosciences, Engineering, Environmental and Marine Sciences, Life Health and Medical Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Science & Engineering-related, or Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Graduation must have occurred within the last 48 months or be anticipated by June 1, 2029.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in science applications, user-centered design, and software development. Experience with front-end design tools and methodologies is preferred.

Skills

Basic proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Figma is required. Familiarity with Agile methodologies and experience with scientific workflows is beneficial.

Pay

The stipend rate may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. Exact rates will be provided if you are interviewed and selected.

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for 10 weeks, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DOI and is contingent on the availability of funds.
