USDA-ARS Sugarcane Phenotyping - High School Research Internship

About the role

This internship offers hands-on laboratory and field research experience related to sugarcane phenotyping. Participants will work on assessing different varieties of cane for yield and quality traits, such as cold tolerance, recoverable sucrose, biomass yield, disease resistance, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Gain experience in laboratory techniques including filtration, pipetting, solution preparation, data recording, and compilation.
  • Learn to use standard laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometers, pH meters, centrifuges, HPLCs, etc.
  • Collect field data to assess yield and traits for adaptation to local growing conditions.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a high school diploma and is eager to learn applied plant phenotyping in the field, laboratory, and greenhouse. A positive attitude and ability to collaborate well with others are preferred.

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship is required. No prior experience is necessary; training will be provided.

Benefits

No benefits are provided as this is a research internship. Participants will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
