About the role

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is seeking an intern to contribute to the assessment of seed viability as part of Project Baseline. This project, initiated in 2010, aims to evaluate changes in seed viability over the past 15 years.

Responsibilities

  • Assess seed viability by evaluating the speed and completeness of seed germination.
  • Compare current viability data with measurements taken in 2010-2012.
  • Learn the basics of seed curation and gene banking, focusing on seed preservation and longevity.
  • Identify and classify approximately 100 species of seeds native to the United States based on their morphological characteristics.
  • Evaluate symptoms of seed aging, such as RNA integrity and thermal properties of seed oils.
  • Collect and organize data related to seed germination and dormancy.

Requirements

To be considered, candidates must be pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in any plant science discipline. Preference is given to those with interest in seed morphology and physiology, detail-oriented individuals, and U.S. citizenship.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree in Plant Science.

Skills

  • Interest in seed morphology and physiology.
  • Detail-oriented with strong data collection skills.

Pay

The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience, ranging from $1,000 to $1,200.
