USDA-ARS Postdoctoral Research Computational Biology Fellowship

About the role

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) in Ames, Iowa, is seeking a highly motivated individual to join their team as a research fellow. The fellow will work on projects focusing on swine bacterial pathogens Streptococcus suis and Glaesserella parasuis.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research using swine infection models
  • Utilize genomic and transcriptomic data to build comprehensive knowledge bases on genetic factors influencing bacterial colonization and disease outcomes
  • Collaborate with microbiologists and immunologists to unravel complex molecular mechanisms
  • Develop analytical pipelines and algorithms for RNA-seq and whole-genome data

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or have received a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields
  • Experience with bacterial genetics, disease biology, and genomic/transcriptomic methods
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, pipelines, and statistical methods for large-scale genomic and transcriptomic datasets
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments
  • Excellent communication and scientific writing skills

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology) received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing
  • Understanding of modern genomic and transcriptomic methods
  • Prior experience with bioinformatics tools and workflows
  • Experience in high-performance computing
  • Ability to collaborate and conduct research within a multidisciplinary team

Skills

  • Understanding of bacterial genetics
  • Familiarity with transcriptomic analysis packages and workflow managers
  • Prior use of bioinformatics tools and pipelines for large-scale genomic and transcriptomic datasets
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments

Benefits

The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of $75,284 annually.

$75,284.00 yearly

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
