About the role
The USDA research project aims to provide stewardship of soybean and other major legume genetic, genomic, and phenotypic datasets to support research and crop improvement. The project conducts both basic and applied research focusing on managing insect pests, improving crop genetics, and studying host-pathogen interactions in cereals and legumes.
Responsibilities
- Apply methods in computational biology, genetics, and artificial intelligence, including statistical methods of marker-trait association, methods for determining syntenic relationships, and methods for inferring gene families and evolutionary events.
- Conduct writing within scientific manuscripts.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in relevant field within the last 5 years.
- Knowledge of basic methods in genomic sequence analysis and plant genetics.
- Unix scripting skills, knowledge of programming languages like Python, Perl, awk, or R, and statistical methods for interpreting sequence homology results.
- Biological knowledge, particularly botanical knowledge (e.g., knowledge of major taxonomic groupings in the angiosperms).

Benefits
- Monthly stipend ranging from $75,284 to $90,234 annually.
