USDA-ARS Biobased Polymers Fellowship

About the role

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is seeking a fellow to contribute to a research project focused on developing new rubber composites and additives from plant-based feedstocks. The fellow will work within the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, Illinois.

Responsibilities

• Understand the chemical and physical properties of natural rubber, fillers sourced from agricultural products, and rubber additives.
• Design, compound, and analyze new rubber composite formulations.
• Utilize rheological data to monitor and optimize compounding processes.
• Apply principles of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry to synthesize potential 6PPD replacements from biobased starting materials.
• Characterize material performance, stability, degradability, and safety using advanced analytical and engineering methods.
• Integrate sustainability considerations, including life-cycle thinking and green chemistry principles, into material development.
• Collaborate across disciplines and engage stakeholders to ensure research relevance, scalability, and real-world impact.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing or having received a doctoral degree in relevant fields.

Qualifications

• Strong background in organic chemistry and polymer chemistry.
• Experience with rheology and material characterization techniques.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Skills

• Knowledge of rubber chemistry and formulation.
• Experience with experimental design and data analysis.
• Proficiency in laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

Benefits

• Monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience, ranging from $82,500 - $92,500 annually.
• Opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research and stakeholder collaboration.
• Flexibility in start date, contingent on availability of funds.

Pay

• $82,500 - $92,500 annually.

Schedule

• Full-time appointment initially for one year, with possibility of renewal.
