About the role

The Staff Software Engineer will lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks, aligned with strategic priorities. This role encompasses full lifecycle ownership of software solutions—from design and coding to deployment and maintenance—applying cloud-native principles to enhance system resilience and agility. The position requires technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration across teams to drive engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. The engineer will engage stakeholders to translate complex problems into actionable requirements, ensuring high-quality, maintainable, and secure software solutions that support business objectives.

About the team

The Display Ads Optimization & Machine Learning team at Walmart Connect develops scalable, distributed systems powering a leading retail media platform. The team designs and implements machine learning solutions for targeting, bidding, budget allocation, and performance measurement, processing billions of daily signals for real-time decision-making. Engineers collaborate with Applied Scientists, ML Engineers, and Product Managers to build backend services, data pipelines, and optimization algorithms that enhance advertiser outcomes and customer experiences. This team drives innovation and operational excellence by applying cloud-native architecture, software design patterns, and data-driven practices to deliver impactful retail media technology solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver platform capabilities including infrastructure, tooling, and ML frameworks aligned with roadmap milestones and domain priorities.
  • Drive full software development lifecycle activities such as coding, testing, deployment, observability, and maintenance.
  • Apply cloud-native architecture principles to ensure scalable, resilient, and agile systems.
  • Conduct system design reviews to validate feasibility and quality while ensuring alignment with architectural best practices.
  • Build AI-driven applications and integrate ML components to support automation and multi-step reasoning.
  • Mentor engineers, influence technical decisions, and promote engineering excellence through documentation and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate across teams to define technical requirements and track success metrics using data-driven practices.

Requirements

  • Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation to ensure scalable and resilient systems.
  • Strong proficiency in software design patterns, API design, and software prototyping to deliver maintainable and modular solutions.
  • Experience driving full software development lifecycle activities, including coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and observability.
  • Ability to integrate AI/ML components and develop intelligent automation using languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, or C++.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring skills, and sound judgment in architectural and technical decision-making.
  • Data-driven mindset with experience in defining metrics and optimizing engineering processes.
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills across technical and business stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses and may include stock for certain positions.
