About the role
The Tool & Prototype Maker performs preventive maintenance, repairs support equipment, trains others, and oversees overall shop functions. Responsibilities include fabricating engineered prototype parts, precision tools (jigs, molds, dies), special guides, and holding devices from metals, alloys, plastics, and ceramics using both manual and CNC processes.
Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day Tool & Prototype Making operations while adhering to internal safety and efficiency guidelines.
- Use sketches, blueprints, specifications, and models to plan fabrication of dies, tools, and assemblies.
- Verify dimensions of finished parts with dial indicators, gauge blocks, calipers, micrometers, and other precision instruments.
- Operate hand and machine tools to assemble, repair, and modify gauges, jigs, and dies.
- Design templates and jigs as work aids for product fabrication.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with tools, manually operated dies, and progressive dies.
- Interface with internal and external customers, address supplier concerns, and collaborate with team members to resolve production problems.
- File and finish workpieces to ensure smooth surfaces and proper fit.
- Select appropriate metals and materials based on project specifications and material properties.
- Use CAD software to create complex models, patterns, templates, and detailed component drawings for new product concepts.
Requirements
- 2-year vocational training plus at least 5 years of practical experience.
- Experience with Amada Coma Turret punch press, Amada brake press, Hurco machining center, and Mitsubishi wire EDM.
- Minimum of 3 years programming 3- and 5-axis CNC machines using CAM programs or G-code.
- Experience with tooling and adjusting speeds and feeds.
- Complete knowledge of equipment and practices for fixture, prototype, and mold building.
- Full knowledge of precision inspection practices, hand tools, and equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of materials used in tool, prototype, and mold fabrication.
- Ability to select correct materials based on machining, heat treating, welding, wear, and polishing requirements.
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and tool drawings.
- Ability to program and operate CNC mills, CNC EDMs, CNC lathes, and other standard toolroom equipment.
- CAD/CAM experience preferred (SolidWorks and Mastercam).
- Excellent PC skills with the ability to learn new programs quickly.
- Analytical thinking combined with conceptual and organizational abilities.
- Team-oriented personality with the ability to work independently or collaboratively in an international environment.
- Proactive approach to executing daily tasks and achieving long-term goals.
