URBAN FARM SUMMER INTERN
Internship Description
The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Inc. (RIPA) offers a four-week summer program for Urban Farm Summer Interns. This program provides hands-on experience, cross-departmental learning, and professional development in urban environmental/non-profit careers.
Interns will contribute to field-based projects at Randall’s Island Park, participate in workshops, career panels, and a culminating project. They will gain foundational experience in a professional setting funded by the Pinkerton Foundation.
Position Description
The Urban Farm Intern reports to the Urban Farm Manager and Urban Farm Lead. They work alongside other members of the Urban Farm team, interns, and volunteers to maintain the Urban Farm on Randall’s Island. The Intern assists with event logistics on the farm and performs other general tasks as assigned.
Major Responsibilities
- Assist farmers with preparation and maintenance of the Urban Farm including soil cultivation, digging, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, edging, pruning, seed sowing, trellising, planting, and composting
- Aid farmers in facilitating educational field trips and public programs held on the Urban Farm
- Interact kindly, enthusiastically, and respectfully with park patrons and all farm visitors
- Assist with programming events, department-wide, as needed
Qualification Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Interest in agriculture, farming, food, composting, urban green spaces, etc.
- Interest in working with children in hands-on, outdoor programming
- Motivated and punctual, able to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to use light power equipment and hand tools
- Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions
- Ability to perform physical labor; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to collaborate and create positive working relationships
- Ability to shift priorities and focus, when needed
- Detail-oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness on the farm and throughout the park
- Ability to answer questions from park patrons in a friendly and welcoming manner
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic gardening/landscaping skills
- Interest in public parks and the environment
- Experience working with the public
- Good communication skills

Compensation
This position is hourly, $20/hr +
