Upward Bound Project Advisor

About the role

This position is to fulfill the job vacancy at one of Simpson University's Upward Bound sites in Siskiyou and Shasta Counties. The role involves recruiting and supporting a full cohort of 60 students meeting First-Generation and Low-Income thresholds, providing college readiness and career services, and working closely with the director and other project advisors.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and administer the Upward Bound curriculum, workshops, and one-on-one sessions.
  • Provide academic, career, and personal mentoring/advisement to program participants.
  • Aid in student recruitment, collecting and managing data in the Upward Bound database.
  • Plan and supervise college campus visits and cultural excursions.
  • Support the summer residential program, including monitoring academic progress and referring participants to additional services.
  • Represent Simpson University in various professional settings.

Requirements

  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, liberal studies, psychology, or related field.
  • Master’s degree and/or teaching credential preferred.
  • Able to travel all day, single night, multiple nights, up to week-long for college-campus visits and professional development opportunities.
  • Able to travel by car, bus, train, and airplane.
  • Experience teaching and advising large numbers of ethnically, linguistically, and/or economically diverse high school students.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and knowledge of classroom management techniques.
  • Willingness for professional development in job-related areas.
  • Knowledge of Christian and secular higher education admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.
  • Experience communicating these policies to a broad audience.
  • Knowledge of public schools (K-12) and the California systems of higher education (CCC, CSU, UC, and AICCU).
  • Initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to use and/or learn to use various technology tools.
  • Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and ability to handle and work with confidential records and materials of minors.
  • Professional approach in carrying out multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and achieving measurable results.
