Academic Advisor - Upward Bound

Full-time, exempt position with a starting salary range of $44,364.92–$55,456.14, based on internal equity, relevant experience, and education.

About the Role

Serves as a student advisor, working collaboratively with faculty in respective academic departments. Facilitates summer advising and registration, monitors students’ academic progress and academic standing, assists students with meeting degree requirements, manages caseloads, and provides additional assistance to students.

Responsibilities

• Participates in mandatory professional development facilitated by the Advising Director, events, activities, and programs contributing to student retention and graduation.
• Attends and engages in academic advising professional development opportunities.
• Collaborates with faculty in respective academic departments to provide up-to-date major-specific curricular options and with other campus organizations to facilitate student success.
• Facilitates summer advising and registration through individual student meetings, group advising sessions, and curriculum presentations for prospective, new, and current students.
• Monitors students’ academic progress and academic standing, including re-enrollment at the end of each registration period and semester. Actively participates in student retention through early alerts and midterm checkpoints with at-risk students by providing guidance and resources (e.g., GPA review, strategic course scheduling, and campus referrals).
• Assists students with meeting graduation requirements using degree checklists, semester-by-semester plans, degree auditing, course scheduling, registration, course substitutions, study abroad, and/or transfer options (when applicable).
• Helps students gain Pathways Curriculum proficiency and navigate Trinity’s automated systems.
• Advises students using theories, practices, and methodologies to facilitate successful navigation of their academic and professional paths, connecting academic interests to professional endeavors.
• Manages student advising caseload with intentional outreach and presence to foster positive rapport through email, online advising, in-person appointments, walk-ins, and group advising while maintaining accurate records of student contacts.
• Reviews student records and test scores for appropriate course recommendations.
• Provides consistent, accurate, timely, and student-centered transactional and holistic academic advising for all first-year and sophomore students through to declaration of a major.
• Interprets the University’s General, Pathways, and Major/Minor curricula requirements to foster student understanding.
• Facilitates preliminary conversations on internships and experiential learning, with referrals to appropriate campus resources.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university (required).
• Master’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university (preferred).
• One year of experience working with students in an academic setting (required).
• Experience working in higher education (required).
• Two years of direct academic advising experience or extensive experience in counseling, group work assessment, or administration of academic programs (e.g., admissions, registrar, career services, orientation) (preferred).
