Details Posted: 07-Jul-26 Location: Michigan Type: Full Time Salary: Competitive Salary Categories English/Language Arts Required Education 4 Year Degree Job Title: Upper School English Teacher Reports to: Assistant Head of School and Head of Upper School (Head of Upper School) Receive Guidance From: English Department Chair, Head of Upper School, Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning Collaborate Closely With: English Department, the Teaching and Learning Team The Upper School English teacher will support the mission and core values of University Liggett School through positive and professional interaction with students and faculty. The Upper School English teacher will be responsible for ensuring that the school’s curriculum, mission, vision, and strategic plan inform all decisions and actions. The teacher will promote an atmosphere of trust and openness among employees, students, and parents and will foster students’ intellectual, social, behavioral, and emotional growth. Duties And Responsibilities Teach four or five sections of upper school EnglishCreate class environments committed to close reading of complex texts, thoughtful discussion, and analytical writing Design writing assignments that stretch student thinking and imagination Participate actively in advancing the English department’s curriculum and The Liggett Approach Scaffold assessments effectively and respond thoughtfully and promptly to student workMaintain comprehensive documentation pertaining to course syllabi, scope and sequence information, lesson plans, the online portal, and the gradebook, ensuring prompt dissemination of this information when requiredCollaborate with colleagues and engage in department discussions about pedagogy and other concernsCreate an equitable and inclusive class environment that promotes community, integrity, respect, excellence, and empathyCommunicate thoughtfully, professionally, and clearly with familiesServe as an upper school advisor, supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of students and acting as a liaison between school and homeParticipate actively and positively in the life of the school through involvement in co-curricular activities Qualifications A bachelor's degree or higher in English or an equivalent fieldEnthusiasm for upper school students and an understanding of their developmental needsA thoughtful and engaging approach to teaching, learning, and assessmentStrong writer, reader, speaker, and listenerA growth mindset about teaching practices and an eagerness to work toward professional goals and developmentA keen desire to work in a collaborative, inclusive, and student-centered environmentAbility to connect with students of diverse backgrounds to develop healthy, supportive, and responsive relationshipsEnthusiasm for reading outside of teachingCommitment to supporting and being present in the life of the schoolFacility with technology in the classroom Work Environment This job operates in a professional school environment.
