Core responsibilities
- Repair and restoration: Examine and repair furniture frames, springs, and webbing; replace worn or damaged parts.
- Padding and cushioning: Apply and shape padding materials like foam, cotton, or felt to create a smooth, cushioned surface.
- Covering and finishing: Measure, cut, sew, and fit fabric or leather to the frame, securing it with staples, glue, or tacks.
- Custom work: Create custom furniture from scratch or re-style existing pieces.
- Material selection: Advise clients on materials and styles, and read work orders to determine material needs.
- Finishing: Refinish or paint exposed wooden parts of the furniture as part of the job.
- Quality control: Inspect completed work to ensure it meets quality standards.
- Estimating: Prepare time and material estimates for jobs.
Essential Skills And Qualifications
- Technical skills: Proficiency with a variety of tools, such as staple guns, sewing machines, scissors, and potentially power tools like saws and drills.
