University Student Assistant - Police Communications Officer (Summer 2026 - Fall 2026)

Salary: $8.25 per hour (Max 26 hours per week)

About the role

The University Student Aid Police Communications Officer operates assigned radio frequencies, performs 9-1-1 and Alabama Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (A.L.E.T.S.) duties, operates the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), maintains records and files, and complies with all rules and regulations of the Police Department and University. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.

Responsibilities

• Operates assigned radio frequencies, receiving from and transmitting to authorized units.
• Performs 9-1-1 duties: answers telephones, transfers callers to appropriate locations, enters data into the 9-1-1 computer system, and monitors incoming calls.
• Performs Alabama Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (A.L.E.T.S) system duties: receives, processes, and sends teletypes; enters data into the Alabama Crime Information Center (ACIC-NCIC).
• Operates Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD).
• Maintains appropriate records and files pertaining to Emergency Dispatch Center Operations.
• Complies with all Departmental and University rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
• Performs other assignments and duties as required and/or necessary.
• Handles confidential information; a confidentiality agreement must be signed upon employment.
• May assist in administrative and accreditation functions as needed.
• Visual acuity required for working with details, computer terminals, extensive reading, and preparing/analyzing data.
• Physical activities include standing, walking, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive movements.
• Operates various communications equipment.
• Comprehends and articulates verbal, written, and electronic communications.

Schedule

• Department operates 24 hours a day; shifts may include:
  • 1st shift (06:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)
  • 2nd shift (2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.)
  • 3rd shift (10:00 p.m. – 06:00 a.m.)
• May work holidays and weekends.

Requirements

• No felony convictions or convictions involving moral turpitude; must pass a background check with fingerprints.
• Entry-level position; meets all standards for licensing as a tele-communicator according to Alabama Criminal Justice Center.
• Complies with Alabama Criminal Justice Center on Officer Standards, Education, and Departmental rules for continuing certification.
• Passes all required entry-level testing and exhibits no indication of current substance abuse.
• Successfully completes all required training.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Certification to operate the NCIC terminal must be completed within six months of hire; must be at least 19 years of age when achieving NCIC Certification.
• Provides three personal references and agrees to a thorough criminal background check.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
• If not a first-time student, must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
• Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout from MyJSU).

Additional Requirements for International Students

• Must be in a valid immigration status.
• Must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess:
  • Passport from their respective country.
  • F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
  • U.S. Customs Form I-94.
  • Official photo identification.
  • Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
• Required documents: Cover Letter, Resume, Unofficial Transcript.
