About the role

The University of Scranton is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all its members. As a University Police Officer, you will serve and protect the University Community through delivering professional and compassionate policing services.

Responsibilities

  • Manage incidents affecting the safety of all individuals, including University guests, students, and employees.
  • Enforce laws and regulations, including constitutional requirements, federal, state, and local statutes, and Pennsylvania case law.
  • Respond to emergency calls, mediate disputes, conduct investigations, and assist in crime prevention and community relations.
  • Provide first aid and request medical assistance when necessary.
  • Conduct patrols, traffic enforcement, and address student behavioral issues.
  • Testify in court proceedings and participate in the Student Code of Conduct process.
  • Assist citizens with complaints and inquiries.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including a criminal record check, credit history check, driving record, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.
  • Must have Pennsylvania Title 53 (Act 120) Certification and MPOETC compliance certification.
  • Must meet the Lethal Weapons Training Act requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, and the ability to support the University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all duties of a police officer, including serving and protecting the community, safeguarding lives and property, and responding to emergencies.
  • Must have a current knowledge of federal, state, and local laws relevant to the University and law enforcement.
  • Must be able to support the University's Catholic and Jesuit mission.

Skills

  • Ability to handle crises and emergencies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using police-related equipment.

Pay

The pay rate for this position is $25.00 per hour. A $4,500 Sign On Bonus is also offered, paid out over a 3-year period.
