About the role
The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single point of contact in the branch for SouthState customers’ financial needs. This position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and Financial Service Representative (FSR), providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management. The Universal Banker seeks to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and is responsible for contributing to the financial growth of the bank.
Responsibilities
- Serve customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to SouthState Bank Service Standards.
- Understand and explain the bank’s products and services, including features, benefits, rules, regulations, and pricing.
- Identify customer needs and expectations by listening for clues; expand relationships by making referrals.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensure compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develop a strong understanding of customer-facing technology to discuss and enroll customers in self-service options.
Teller Duties
- Process transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintain a neat and orderly work area; may assist in guiding and training new tellers.
- Provide customers access to safe deposit boxes as needed.
- Cash checks and process savings withdrawals within assigned limits and in accordance with procedures.
- Sell certified checks and balance transactions daily.
- Service and balance ATMs; utilize the branch capture system.
- Follow policies and procedures to minimize operational errors and maintain workflow.
- Adhere to the branch’s security and audit procedures, including the operation of security devices.
Financial Service Representative (FSR) Duties
- Open new deposit accounts and handle services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions.
- Explain policies and procedures to customers, resolving problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion.
- Direct customers with complex issues to appropriate resources for assistance.
- Promote additional services by addressing customer problems as opportunities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of financial services offered by the bank.
- Express appreciation for customers’ time and business; provide business cards as needed.
- Follow the branch’s security and audit procedures, including the operation of security devices.
- Ensure branch records, reports, and customer correspondence are accurate, timely, and properly distributed.
Additional Responsibilities
- May include vault responsibilities or backup vault duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One year of teller or cash handling experience.
- Six months of customer relationship building or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Cash handling, sales, and customer service; previous banking experience preferred.
- Skills: Good interpersonal and computer skills; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations.
- Ability to identify customers.
Work Environment
This position is typically located in an open lobby area with an individual workstation inside a climate-controlled facility. Access to a break room or restroom is available during breaks. Occasional travel may be required for meetings or training.
