About the role

Serve as the Research Program Manager for the Division of GI & Hepatology, acting as the point of contact for research operations related to assigned programs and projects. The lab’s focus is on the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases in the GI tract (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease) and the impact of environmental factors such as circadian misalignment, alcohol misuse, and stress.

This position operates with a substantial amount of autonomy, requiring sound judgment and adaptability to a dynamic environment. As the research mission grows, this individual will provide guidance to other divisional programs, including developing research protocols, hiring decisions, and equipment purchases.

Responsibilities

  • Daily and Ongoing Operations (20%):
    • Oversee and guide laboratory staff in protocol improvements for validity and accuracy.
    • Recommend and oversee acquisition, validation, and implementation of new equipment and protocols.
    • Ensure radiation and laboratory safety requirements are up to date and implemented.
    • Maintain a safe, uncluttered work environment and prepare for inspections.
    • Manage cell line work, including colonic cell lines and organoids.
    • Coordinate research activities with clinical research staff and handle human tissues and samples.
    • Oversee daily husbandry, sanitation, feeding, breeding colony management, and enrichment schedules in conventional and barrier facilities.
    • Serve as a liaison to the IACUC, participating in inspections, program reviews, and post-approval monitoring.
    • Maintain records of animal census, veterinary care, environmental monitoring, and sanitation logs.
    • Oversee the GI tissue sample repository.
    • Respond to safety events and complaints in a timely manner.
  • PI Research Portfolio Oversight and Management (20%):
    • Oversee research projects from planning to submission, implementation, and closeout.
    • Ensure regulatory approvals (IRB, IACUC) and proper execution of materials transfer/data agreements.
    • Collaborate with centralized and divisional teams for grant preparation, submission, and post-award management.
    • Work with other institutions to submit grant proposals.
    • Assist PIs in submitting grant materials through eCommons.
    • Develop, modify, and monitor long-term goals and process improvements with leadership.
  • Staff Oversight (20%):
    • Supervise research staff, including delegation of responsibilities and performance management.
    • Conduct employment interviews and participate in hiring decisions.
    • Train and supervise laboratory staff, medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral research fellows, and volunteers.
    • Serve as the direct supervisor for laboratory staff, including approving PTO and conducting yearly evaluations.
    • Monitor, regulate, and adjust workflows to ensure timely task completion.
  • Financial Involvement (20%):
    • Oversee financial aspects of lab operations, including monitoring expenses, budgets, and inventory.
    • Provide recommendations for capital and operational budgets.
    • Partner with the Division Administrator and Department of Medicine Pre and Post Award Team for fiscal management.
  • Data Collection, Reporting, and Manuscript Preparation (20%):
    • Collect and analyze data, and assist with manuscript revisions and submissions.
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports (e.g., IRB) for studies under purview.
    • Ensure accurate data entry into databases and proper sample storage.
    • Provide statistical analysis and generate graphical representations of data.
    • Assist leadership in reviewing, formatting, and preparing tables, graphs, and presentations for grants, publications, and reports.
    • Coordinate with local, national, and international collaborators for research endeavors.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and three years of relevant program experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform job functions in upright, seated, and walking/mobile positions (frequent).
  • Ability to work indoors continuously and outdoors infrequently in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in confined/cramped spaces, kneel, squat, and perform pinching operations (infrequent).

  • Ability to work in dusty areas (infrequent).

Pay

Pay range: $66,400.00 - $92,900.00 - $119,500.00 annually.

Schedule

  • Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
  • Work shift: Day (United States of America).
