About the role

The Department of Pharmacology and Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for a Research Instructor position. This position is for a faculty-level mass spectrometrist affiliated with the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology, the Digestive Disease Research Center Core for Proteomics, and the I3 Umbrella Omics Core.

Responsibilities

  • Significant collaborative and instructional interactions within the different centers represented by the four current proteomic center faculty, including the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology, Digestive Disease Research Center Core for Proteomics, and the I3 Umbrella Omics Core.
  • Extensive experience in training new users on sample preparation and instrument operation for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Preparing joint grant proposals with MUSC researchers and potentially other collaborators outside of MUSC.
  • Organizing and teaching in an annual workshop of mass spectrometry applications hosted at MUSC.

Requirements

  • An M.S. or B.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical science or equivalent with a minimum of seven years relevant experience at the time of appointment is required.
  • Experience in MALDI mass spectrometry and electrospray tandem mass spectrometry for analysis of glycans, metabolites, lipids and proteins.
  • Minimum 4 years experience with vendor instrument operating software, data analysis and different proteomic and metabolomic databases.
  • Experience at training new personnel in performing multiple experimental workflows and teaching the underlying chemical and biomedical principles.
  • Prior experience in working at biotech companies and/or mass spectrometer vendors is highly desired.

Qualifications

  • Excellent data analysis skills are required.
  • Ability to perform job functions in an upright position, seated position, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors, working in all cold temperature extremes, bending, twisting, pinching, reaching, using hands/arms, performing repetitive motions, using both legs, seeing, recognizing objects, matching/discriminating between colors, determining distance/relationship between objects, maintaining tactile sensory functions, olfactory sensory function, lifting and carrying 15 lbs., lowering objects, pushing/pulling objects, lifting and carrying objects up to 15 lbs. a distance of five floors and to outlying buildings, maintaining 20/40 vision, seeing and recognizing objects close at hand, seeing and recognizing objects at a distance, determining distance/relationship between objects; depth perception, good peripheral vision capabilities, hearing acuity, with correction, performing gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, being qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually, working alone in isolated areas, such as darkrooms, and working rotating shifts as required.
