The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is the state-designated Local Mental Health Authority and Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority serving Harris County, Texas. As the largest behavioral and developmental disability care center in Texas, The Harris Center provides care to over 90,000 people annually.
About the role
Under the direction of the Clinical Team Leader or Program Director, this position assists licensed clinical staff with administrative and clerical tasks to support unit operations.
Responsibilities
- Answer phones in a timely, professional manner; direct calls and information to appropriate staff.
- Set up, maintain, and organize consumers’ medical records, including entering information to generate and print chart labels.
- Enter consumer information into appropriate software applications and maintain accurate daily unit census (including consumer logs and Eboard).
- Open and close assignments accurately in the system when consumers are admitted or discharged.
- Respond to requests from licensed clinical staff (e.g., pulling charts, retrieving supplies/forms).
- Supply the unit and dock areas with current forms and complete tasks assigned by the Clinical Team Leader or Program Director.
- Generate, produce, and organize requested reports, documents, or forms as needed.
- Assist with court papers and provide notary services for clinical staff.
- Monitor fax machines, distribute documents to appropriate staff, and handle faxing/copying requests.
- Maintain the Missing Persons book and consumer informational handouts.
- Adapt to changing work requirements and remain flexible to meet the agency’s ongoing needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
- Minimum of 1 year of clerical or receptionist experience.
- Knowledge of general office equipment (telephone, fax, copier) and basic office computer applications.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written) for interacting with staff and consumers.
- Demonstrated time management and multitasking abilities.
- Well-organized and detail-oriented.

Schedule
- Saturday – Sunday, 2:30 PM – 7:00 AM (.8 FTE).
