About the Role

A hybrid position that primarily serves as a Unit Secretary and also performs basic nursing assistant duties as needed, supporting patient care within the assigned nursing unit. This role operates under close or general supervision of licensed personnel and requires appropriate training and clinical competency validation.

Responsibilities

• Unit Secretary Duties:
  • Performs general reception and administrative tasks at the nurse’s station.
  • Responds to patient calls via intercom or in person, assisting patients, families, visitors, and staff professionally.
  • Provides clerical support, including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
  • Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager, including monitoring PAR levels and maintaining supply rooms.
  • Coordinates maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional environment in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitors patient safety systems and notifies the appropriate RN of alerts.
• Patient Care Tech Duties:
  • Provides direct patient care as directed by providers and licensed staff, following established policies and protocols.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, including eating, dressing, toileting, bathing, and transferring.
  • Prepares patient rooms for admission, including orienting patients and families to the unit.
  • Assists with patient mobility, including walking, turning, positioning, and ambulating.
  • Performs data collection, such as vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, specimen collection, and fluid intake/output documentation.
  • Conducts point-of-care testing as trained and reports results to the RN.
  • Provides basic wound care, including sterile and non-sterile dressings, perineal care, and ostomy care.
  • Assists with respiratory support, including nasal cannula and incentive spirometry.
  • Performs phlebotomy, EKGs, and insertion/removal of straight catheters (in-and-out) or removal of Foley catheters with appropriate training.
  • Assists with fall prevention, patient restraints, and non-pharmacological pain management.
  • Transports patients to diagnostic studies and floor assignments.
  • Documents all observations, clinical data, and procedures in the EMR.
  • Maintains and returns medical equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, hallways, and kitchens; changes linens as needed.
  • Consults with supervisors regarding unit activities, needs, or patient care issues.
  • Adheres to departmental, unit, and hospital policies, including safety, infection control, and patient rights.
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives and educates/mentors other care team members.
  • Attends department and organizational meetings; completes annual compliance training.
  • Performs patient observer duties and other assigned tasks.

Requirements

• Education: Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman, or nursing fundamentals course preferred.
• Experience: No prior experience required, but previous experience as a nursing assistant, PCT, MA, EMT, Paramedic, Surgical Tech, Phlebotomist, Medical Corpsman, or nursing student is preferred.
• Licensure, certification, or registration in the field of training is preferred but not required.
