About the role
A Unit Secretary, also known as a Unit Clerk, Clinical Unit Secretary, or Medical Unit Secretary, provides indirect patient care by managing departmental communications, organizing records, transcribing physician orders when needed, and ensuring charts, logs, and electronic records are accurate and complete. They support the unit by coordinating with physicians and departments, ordering supplies, restocking rooms after transfers or discharges, and assisting nursing staff with non-clinical tasks.
Responsibilities
- Provide indirect patient care by assisting with departmental organization, communication needs, and coordination between staff, physicians, and patients
- Enter and transcribe physician orders (in the absence of CPOE) with proper nursing notation and signature
- Prepare, compile, and maintain patient records, charts, logbook entries, and documentation for the Perinatal Unit
- Order supplies and forms for the unit, and assist nursing staff with restocking patient rooms after transfers or discharges
- Accurately enter data into hospital computer systems and the QS Electronic Medical Record system while supporting nursing staff with indirect care tasks
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current BLS (AHA) certificate within 6 months of hire and maintain current
- Additional qualifications that are a plus: medical terminology, experience using computers for word processing, database management, full benefits at Prime Healthcare
