About the role
The Unit Secretary supports an inpatient unit at VCU Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, which serves diverse surgical specialties including oncology, plastic surgery, microsurgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, and urology. The unit is part of a center of excellence for bariatric surgery and offers comprehensive care for critically ill and injured patients.
Responsibilities
- Prepares, maintains, and processes patient and unit activities, data, and records
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of patient documentation
- Coordinates communication between patients, staff, and external parties
- Handles and transports medications and related supplies safely
- Assists with administrative tasks such as scheduling, billing, and insurance verification
Requirements
- Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: None required for hire or continued employment
- Experience: No required or preferred experience
- Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED; completion of a Medical Terminology course preferred

- Self-directed and able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision
- Able to handle multiple priorities and adapt to frequent change
- Able to handle noisy environments and frequent customer interactions
- Able to communicate effectively and handle sensitive issues promptly

Additional Position Requirements
- Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Individual shift rotation and schedules established with specific Nurse Manager
- Schedules may be adjusted to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit
