About the role
The Unit Secretary functions under the direction of the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager to facilitate the provision of safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care by performing clerical and receptionist functions. These include computer order entry, retrieval of data, maintaining unit supplies, transporting supplies/equipment/patient medications, preparing and maintaining patient charts, providing customer service, and acting as the central communication source on the nursing unit.
Responsibilities
- Excellence in Customer Service: Partners with healthcare team, patient, and family to protect rights and dignity of patients at all times. Builds relationships with families, maintains confidentiality, and participates in hourly patient rounding. Maintains paper and electronic medical records, resolves patient concerns, and proactively offers assistance.
- Patient-Centered Care: Answers telephone calls and patient call lights, communicates patient needs to the healthcare team, and facilitates patient admission, transfer, and discharge. Tracks bed activity, assists in unit flow management during emergencies, requests patient escort, and monitors data entry for patient safety.
- Team Work: Supports healthcare team initiatives, participates in interdisciplinary rounds, performs charge reconciliation, notifies nurses of physician arrivals, and completes audits. Manages staffing reconciliation, submits supply requisitions, orders durable medical equipment, and participates in performance improvement initiatives.
- Communication: Uses effective written and oral communication with patients, staff, physicians, and visitors. Places consults, maintains IT equipment, acts as a liaison between patients and diagnostic areas, and serves as a unit expert for electronic documentation tools. Facilitates data recovery during downtime and communicates patient care concerns to RNs.
- Safety and Infection Control: Ensures a safe environment for unit operations, follows hand hygiene and infection control policies, and reinforces universal precautions. Operates Xenex machines after patient discharge, performs environment of care rounds, and complies with all Wellstar Health System policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Less than 1 year of clinical experience in an acute care setting.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Strong customer service, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to multi-task, function in stressful situations, and manage details.
- Basic computer skills, including electronic medical record entry.
- Basic medical terminology.
