About the role

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Unit Manager provides leadership and oversight for the daily operations of an assigned nursing unit. This position ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, and resident-centered care in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, facility policies, and professional standards of practice. The LPN Unit Manager serves as a clinical leader, mentor, and resource for nursing staff, while fostering a positive and collaborative environment that supports residents, families, and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises nursing care provided by LPNs, Certified Nursing Assistants/State Tested Nursing Assistants, and others for whom they are professionally responsible.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including:
    • Interviews, recommends hiring, and trains LPNs, CNAs/STNAs.
    • Plans, assigns, and directs workflow.
    • Prepares work assignment sheets, considering resident safety and the educational preparation, experience, knowledge, and ability of staff.
    • Receives calls and finds replacements for absent staff as needed.
    • Transfers employees within units as needed.
    • Prepares performance evaluations for LPNs, CNAs/STNAs, impacting probationary tenure and wage increases.
    • Schedules and adjusts lunch and rest breaks.
    • Receives and resolves employee complaints.
    • Determines rotation of nurses within the unit.
    • Monitors and corrects job performance of LPNs, CNAs/STNAs.
    • Disciplines employees up to and including recommendation of discharge.
    • Adequately supervises assigned LPN/CNA/STNA staff and ensures they supervise employees assigned to them.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in long-term care or post-acute setting.
  • Minimum of 1 year in a supervisory or management role preferred.
  • Working knowledge of nursing practice, infection control, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Current state license to practice as a nurse.
  • Current CPR certification or CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
