About the role
The Unit Manager Registered Nurse oversees the entire operation of a nursing unit within a long-term care healthcare facility.
Responsibilities
- Hires, disciplines, and evaluates employees.
- Plans and facilitates meetings and committees to address resident care issues for the unit.
- Manages the unit with the goal of achieving and maintaining the highest quality of care possible.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to promote the recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of nursing staff members.
- Contacts physicians as necessary and ensures their interventions are timely and appropriate.
- Maintains staffing patterns and census of nursing units and reassigns personnel as needed to meet resident needs and budgetary controls.
- Monitors clinical operations, resident conditions, and ensures appropriate and quality care is provided.
- Obtains medications, supplies, and medical records needed to provide safe, efficient, and therapeutic care to residents.
- Aids in the orientation of new personnel, monitors their skills, and guides and observes staff needing assistance with procedures.
- Participates in the facility's "QA" program.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with a degree preferred.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), depending on state requirements.
- Valid CPR teaching certificate, if required by state.
- Three years of nursing experience, including at least one year in a long-term care environment.
Skills
- Skilled in motivating staff and leading teams.
- Skilled in work assessment and communication with residents and their families, as well as across organizational levels.
- Knowledgeable about state and federal requirements for accreditation and certification.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse resident and employee population.
