About the role

The Y seeks Unit Directors to lead and supervise staff and campers at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island, WA. This is a full-time, seasonal position with a typical workweek of six days on and one day off, including training, staff meetings, and regular duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise assigned seasonal staff by observing, coaching, providing feedback, evaluating, and assisting with problem solving.
  • Supervise and assist with specific camper supervision, ensuring all staff account for campers and safety at all times.
  • Plan, schedule, and facilitate program activities that promote camper skill and character development.
  • Organize, lead, and assist with facilitation of all-camp programming and events.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to developing teen leaders.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure all program equipment is in working condition.
  • Communicate personal or camper/staff needs to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in and lead specific areas of staff training.
  • Maintain relevant American Camping Association standards.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 21 years old or older (preferred)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current Wilderness First Aid certification (paid course is provided as a part of training)
  • 1-2 years of experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, nannying, coaching
  • 1+ years of experience leading others as a supervisor or lead
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing group activities
  • Ability to participate in rigorous physical activities in an outdoor setting including hiking, boating, camping, and swimming
  • Current Washington State food handlers permit (paid course is provided as a part of training)
  • Ability to relate to parents/caregivers, campers, and staff in a professional manner
  • Previous camp experience (preferred)
  • One or more years of applicable education, training, and/or experience (preferred)
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.)
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful (preferred)
  • Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building (preferred)
