About the role

The Unit Coordinator/Secretary at South Shore Health's Mother Infant Unit is responsible for coordinating nursing staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital departments. This role also includes performing general receptionist and clerical duties to ensure efficient unit functioning.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates professional courtesy in all interactions and acts as a resource person to nursing staff, other clinicians, and support services.
  • Interacts with patients and families in a compassionate and humanistic manner, showing empathy, sensitivity, and patience.
  • Utilizes technological solutions to improve work processes and practices, accesses Lotus Notes for email and resources, and orders necessary supplies from Stores or other departments.
  • Ensures accurate discharge disposition documentation and communicates with providers regarding necessary paperwork.
  • Prints, reviews, and inquires about unit reports as needed, files reports in the patient's chart, completes daily chart audits, and conducts shift-to-shift reports.
  • Completes shift rounds, ensuring precaution rooms match med tracks and door tags are correct.
  • Orders supplies from Stores or other departments as needed, collaborates with Operations Supervisor to maintain par levels and order from outside vendors.
  • Fosters a "Culture of Safety" by understanding roles and responsibilities during hospital codes and emergencies, ensuring the unit environment meets regulatory requirements, and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively using the chain of command, stays informed about hospital policy changes, and brings potential compliance issues to managers.
  • Functions as a preceptor for new employees, demonstrates dependability and flexibility in scheduling, and uses critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Conveys respect for values, preferences, and expressed needs of patients and families, collaborates with them in care planning, and welcomes their participation at all times.
  • Considers individual needs of diverse populations, possesses age and cultural knowledge and awareness, and utilizes resources like interpreter services and online sources.

Requirements

Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, basic computer knowledge, and experience with basic medical terminology. Effective communication and documentation skills are essential.
