About the Role
The EMT/UC or CNA/UC provides organizational and administrative support to patient care units and the healthcare team under the direction and supervision of the Nursing Team Leader or other Registered Nurse. This position helps monitor and facilitate activities at the unit nursing station, performs tasks to maintain proper flow of patient care and related documentation, and supports the healthcare team by anticipating and responding to team requests and patient needs. The role includes implementing directions from nursing staff and physicians, assisting with direct and indirect patient care, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.
Responsibilities
- Performs Unit Coordinator duties, including admissions and unit clerk functions:
- Interviews patients or their representatives to obtain or verify personal information, including emergency numbers and insurance details.
- Generates appropriate paperwork for each admission type in accordance with ancillary department requirements.
- Processes patient admissions (in-patient and outpatient), ensuring appropriate physician documentation is obtained.
- Obtains signatures on Conditions of Admission and initiates the advance directive process; updates patient advance directive status.
- Provides information to patients/representatives about billing, complaint processes, patient rights, and visiting hours.
- Interacts professionally with family, visitors, co-workers, and other healthcare providers, fostering communication between disciplines on behalf of the patient.
- Participates in informal conferences involving patient care and communicates ideas for improvement to the unit manager/charge nurse.
- Adheres to Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s Culture of Kindness First Standards.
- Organizes and manages unit activities to ensure consideration of the unit as a whole, including monitoring patient condition and whereabouts when out of the unit.
- Reviews orders within the EMR hourly to ensure completion of X-rays, labs, etc.; transfers critical lab results to the RN in a timely manner.
- Makes referral phone calls and schedules follow-up appointments per physician request.
- Assists in recording information for performance improvement activities.
- Assists with transferring and transporting patients as needed.
- Demonstrates proficiency in computer systems and may be assigned special administrative projects by the nurse manager.
- Pages overhead and through external pagers in a timely, professional, and courteous manner; announces alarm codes and calls appropriate responders.
- Maintains the alarm panel, phone lists, and room number directories.
- Demonstrates proper telephone etiquette, including announcing callers and briefly explaining situations before transferring calls.
- Cleans patient rooms after discharge, including stretchers, BP cuffs, bedside tables, Mayo stands, sink areas, linens, trash, and floors as necessary.
- Assists nursing staff with compiling patient records for transfers, ensuring all transfer forms are accurately completed by physicians and patients.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred.
- Current unrestricted Wyoming Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) License and/or EMT license required.
- BLS certification required.
- Central Registry clearance required.
- Minimum six months of related work experience.
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment.
- Continuing Education per Wyoming State Board of Nursing licensure/certification requirements.
- Behavior de-escalation training within one year of position start.
- Pediatric Advanced Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) certification within one year of hire, required.
- Department-specific medical terminology course preferred.
Skills
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; additional languages desirable.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Demonstrated effective organizational skills.
