About the role
The position serves as a clerical support for patients, visitors, and colleagues on assigned nursing units. It involves facilitating patient registrations, admissions, discharges, and transfers, supporting the patient experience, and maintaining the unit's environment.
Responsibilities
- Answers phones and triages communications to appropriate team members and patients using relevant technology.
- Completes all necessary functions associated with patient admission, discharge, and transfer.
- Assembles and maintains patient medical records from admission through discharge.
- Rounds regularly on all printers for maintenance and distributes/files any printed information.
- Performs any necessary scanning, faxing, copying, and filing.
- Prepares patient information for transfer to another health care facility.
- Maintains unit stocking which may include nurse servers, unit alcoves, and linen closet.
- Checks and removes expired items.
- Serves as liaison between nursing and ancillary departments for information or issue resolution.
- Communicates with Nurse Manager on outstanding interdepartmental issues and participates in a plan to resolve.
- Coordinates non-clinical support functions for assigned nursing unit and assists in maintaining an orderly unit operation.
- Assists in maintaining the unit environment by cleaning and monitoring areas such as equipment storage areas, charting alcoves, workstations, visiting areas, and conference rooms.
- Submits work orders for repairs as needed.
- Completes staffing and scheduling administrative functions as delegated by unit leadership.
- Coordinates regular maintenance and repair of unit equipment such as: Patient care equipment (thermometers, scales, beds, tables), General use equipment such as ice machine, microwave, etc., Computers, printers and other technology.
- Orders and maintains routine forms, and patient care supplies.
- Arranges for transport of documents, specimens or equipment to appropriate destination.
- Locates equipment, medical records or other items required to provide patient care.
- Assists with patient care: Answers patient call lights upon request and relays request to patient care staff member. Functions as a companion for non-restrained patients when needed based on patient care requirements.
- Completes additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrates ability to: read, write, and learn computer functions for EMR (Electronic Medical Record) and other technology. Microsoft office proficiency.
- Ability to perform basic calculations in order to determine patient census and order supplies.
- Demonstrates customer service skills and conflict management skills.
- Demonstrates analytical skills necessary in order to gather and interpret routine data, maintain semi-complex records, prioritize and organize work.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
