Status: Full-Time, Hourly
Shift: Night (11pm to 7:30am), rotating weekends and holidays
About the Role
Performs clerical and receptionist functions for the unit, in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures. Answers inquiries of a general nature by nursing staff, physicians, patients, and families, and carries out principles of positive guest relations.
Responsibilities
- Performs receptionist functions for the nursing unit:
- Answering the telephone within 4 rings professionally
- Answering the call bell via intercom system professionally
- Activating the paging system for both routine and emergency use
- Coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges with other departments
- Carrying out principles of positive guest relations
- Performs clerical functions using the TDS computer system:
- Written order entry
- Report retrieval
- Census updates related to admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Documenting and updating patient allergies, conditions, transport, and diet
- Schedules appointments for patients
- Photocopies medical records per policy and maintains a log of the unit's activity
- Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to:
- Dress code
- Punctuality and attendance
- Mandatory annual training requirements
- Unit Clerk meetings
- Use of appropriate ID badge
- Patient confidentiality
- Applies knowledge and skills relevant to the patient population served on the assigned unit
- Demonstrates good communication and customer service skills
- Participates in patient safety initiatives, including:
- National Patient Safety Goals
- Federal, state, and voluntary regulatory standards
- Unit or departmental specific safety initiatives
- Infection Prevention and other safety programs
- Proper handwashing techniques
- Compliance with RWJUH protocols, policies, and procedures
- Ensures handwritten information is readable
- Adheres to RWJUH Prohibited Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Symbols listing
- Reports errors, high-risk events, and near-misses to immediate supervisor
- Completes online patient safety educational program with a score of 80 or higher
- Demonstrates understanding of information communicated through newsletters, bulletin boards, and memos
Requirements
- High school diploma (required)
- Clerical experience (required)
- Medical terminology (preferred)
Pay
$16.00 - $17.17 per hour. The compensation offered will depend on the candidate's educational background, skills, and professional experience.
