Unit Assistant (CNA) - Pediatrics - PRN - Shift Varies

About the role

Provides a wide variety of support services for the units (s). Provides clerical support by maintaining patient records, unit supplies, equipment, and serving as a facilitator for communications for the assigned area. Functions under the direction of a registered professional nurse. Works collaboratively with the healthcare team. This position will care for patients in the adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and reports basic patient physiological data (such as vital signs, weight, skin condition, color and character of urine and stool).
  • Maintains patient records and documents fluid intake and output.
  • Identifies and reports physical and mental status changes to licensed staff.
  • Organizes patient care and prioritizes tasks according to physician and nursing orders.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures within the scope of the job description.
  • Explains procedures to patients and provides comfort measures.
  • Answers patient calls and requests, ensuring they are directed to the appropriate staff member.
  • Enters discharge times and completes necessary paperwork.
  • Ensures patient safety by following infection control protocols and maintaining equipment.
  • Orients patients and families to their rooms and ensures they have the necessary supplies.
  • Reads and responds to emails and maintains patient charts.
  • Completes daily/weekly requisitions and competencies assessments.

Requirements

  • Licensure or certifications: None specified.
  • Education: High School Diploma, GED, or high school transcript showing completion of at least the sophomore level of high school.
  • Experience: One year previous experience as a nursing assistant, patient care technician, or unit assistant is required. Nursing students who have successfully completed Foundations of Nursing are eligible without previous experience.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with other departments and the general public.
  • Accepts direction from the nursing staff; ability to perform the basic skills and procedures designated for unit assistants.
  • Typing skills preferred but not required; ability to operate the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Good interpersonal skills & adaptable in changing situations & work assignments.
  • Able to concentrate during multiple interactions & interruptions.

Skills

  • Universal Precautions for all patients.
  • Careful adherence to NGHS Hand Hygiene policy.
  • Safe patient environment (i.e. call light within reach, side rails up, etc.).
  • Utilization of equipment cleaning responsibilities and maintenance of properly functioning equipment.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet department staffing needs.
