Union Park Maintenance Worker

About the role
The Park Maintenance position is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance, repair, landscaping, and groundskeeping duties at City parks, facilities, and related properties. Work includes maintaining park grounds and facilities, preparing for City events, operating maintenance equipment and machinery, performing general building repairs, and assisting with special projects and assignments. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, machinery, and grounds maintenance equipment, and perform physically demanding work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
Responsibilities
- Performs general maintenance and groundskeeping operations at City parks, facilities, and related properties.
- Maintains and cleans park grounds, buildings, restrooms, and indoor Park & Recreation facilities.
- Mows, trims, edges, and maintains grass and other landscaped areas at City parks and facilities.
- Plants, maintains, and cares for trees, flowers, shrubs, and other landscaping.
- Picks up and disposes of trash and debris throughout City parks and facilities.
- Prepares City parks and facilities for events, activities, and scheduled programs.
- Unlocks, secures, and inspects facilities as assigned.
- Performs general building maintenance and repairs, including painting and other facility improvements.
- Assists with renovation and improvement projects at City facilities as needed.
- Performs basic plumbing, roofing, electrical, and general building repair duties.
- Performs mechanical maintenance and repairs as assigned.
- Operates hand tools, power tools, grounds maintenance equipment, and other machinery.
- Operates zero-turn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and other lawn maintenance equipment.
- Operates backhoes and other heavy equipment as assigned and qualified.
- Performs special assignments and projects as directed by the Park Superintendent.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of four (4) years of maintenance training or experience.
- Valid driver's license required.
Skills
- Knowledge of general maintenance practices and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, roofing, electrical systems, and general building repair.
- Knowledge of light construction practices and maintenance machinery.
- Skill in the safe and effective operation of hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and machinery.
- Ability to operate zero-turn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and related grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment, including a backhoe, when properly trained and qualified.
- Ability to identify maintenance needs and troubleshoot routine problems.
- Ability to perform basic repairs and maintenance with appropriate direction.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other City employees, and members of the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate appropriate consideration and professionalism when interacting with others.

Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible maintenance or related field experience.
- Experience operating a backhoe and other heavy equipment.
- Experience performing general building, grounds, and facility maintenance.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to extreme heat, cold, inclement weather, dust, dirt, noise, mechanical equipment, and other conditions associated with park and facility maintenance. The position may require work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or during special events, as necessary to meet departmental needs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work for extended periods in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including extreme heat and cold.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, carry, and lift.
