About the Role

The position will also be eligible for a signing bonus (10% of base salary), pending City Council approval. Operates and maintains the City's water production, treatment, and storage facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on wells, booster pumps, treatment and softening facilities and reservoirs, including all mechanical, electrical and electronic control equipment.
  • Operates pumps and related flow and pressure controls and storage facilities manually or by using a system control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Maintains and adjusts system flow and pressure requirements.
  • Controls flows to meet consumer demands including fire flow demands and minimum pressure requirements.
  • Operates and assists in the installation of electronic control and data acquisition equipment.
  • Performs routine chemical tests.
  • Determines and controls proper chemical dosage rates for wellhead disinfection and distribution residual maintenance.
  • Investigates water quality problems in the distribution systems.
  • Pulls, resets, rehabilitates, disinfects and test domestic wells.
  • Drains, cleans, disinfects, and maintains distribution reservoirs.
  • Drives City vehicle to production and storage facilities and delivers chemicals including chlorine, calcium and sodium hypochlorite, sodium sulfate and diesel fuel.
  • Prepares reports, and maintains records of system operation and maintenance.
  • Operates a computer using word processing and spreadsheet software to enter and retrieve information.
  • Operates a drill press, arc and gas welders and other equipment to fabricate minor parts for use in the water system and control mechanisms.
  • Operates equipment such as a backhoe, ditchwitch, tractor, power and hand tools for the repair, fabrication, installation and routine maintenance of plant grounds, facilities and control systems.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Collaborates with staff as assigned.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

    • Knowledge of:

      • Operation and maintenance of complex mechanical and electrical equipment.
      • Relevant preventive maintenance plan.
      • Relevant tools and equipment.
      • Safety standards and safe work practices.
      • Proper safety equipment to use when handling and working with chemicals and other hazardous materials.
      • Procedure for handling chemicals and hazardous materials including OSHA requirements.
      • Effective customer service techniques.
    • Ability to:

      • Operate and maintain complex mechanical and electrical equipment.
      • Follow written and oral instructions.
      • Read and understand blueprints and electrical schematics.
      • Read, comprehend and follow instructions for the safe operation and repair of complex mechanical and electrical equipment.
      • Read and understand the importance of following the manufacturers’ safety data sheet (MSDS) in the event of exposure to hazardous chemicals.
      • Perform work requiring physical dexterity.
      • Lift, carry, and move heavy objects, tools and equipment.
      • Perform mathematical calculations to determine water inventory changes, production rates, flow velocity, differential pressure, level conversions, instrumentation conversions and well efficiency and drawdown.
      • Provide effective customer service.
      • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
      • Coordinate work activities of assigned staff.
    • Skills in:

      • Reading, writing and communicating in English at an appropriate level.
      • The use of computers and various software applications.
  • Education, Training and Experience:

    • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
    • Two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a potable water treatment plant.
  • Licenses and Certificates:

    • Possession of a Class "C" driver license and ability to obtain Hazmat endorsement issued by the Department of Motor Vehicle within one year of the date of hire.
    • Possession of a valid Grade III California Water Treatment Operator's Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.
    • Possession of a Grade III California Water Distribution Certificate.
