Underwriting Counsel (Indiana and Kentucky)

About the role

Provides underwriting support and authorization to company personnel, agents, and customer(s), related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies. Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance. Provides guidance to company personnel in the performance of real estate settlement services.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Examine title orders within company guidelines to determine the conditions of the title and insurability by considering the effect of documents such as deeds, deeds of trust, mechanics liens, tax liens, judgments, assessments, probates and other matters of record
  • Research respective title plant software, analyze and evaluate pertinent record documents for determination of ownership, legal descriptions, and any conjunction to title
  • Explain chain of title, exceptions, and requirements to customers and managers
  • Recognize title defects and formulate curative solution
  • Assess risks and liabilities that may jeopardize the company, and bring these matters to the attention of the local title manager, state title manager or underwriter, as appropriate
  • Maintain proper production levels and delivery standards on a daily basis
  • Work closely with the customer and escrow staff to meet time requirements for options, and assist with answering questions
  • Prepare an accurate and compressive title commitment in accordance with company examining and policy procedures
  • Perform other duties assigned by manager

Required Experience

  • 5+ years title underwriting experience
  • Must be familiar with real estate law
  • Strong understanding of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of real estate title and settlement process
  • General knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services
  • General understanding of underwriting real estate transactions for the issuance of title insurance policies
  • Ability to collaborate and act decisively
  • Detail oriented
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and timely follow up
  • Strong negotiation skills

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk or hear
  • Frequently required to sit
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
