About the role
The Benefits team at ExtensisHR develops and manages a large and complex program to meet the needs of our diverse and rapidly growing worksite employee population, which exceeds 25,000 and is continuing to grow. As Underwriting Analyst, you will report to the Senior Manager, Underwriting and support the New Business Underwriting team in maintaining pricing accuracy, monitoring deal-level and portfolio-level performance, and testing rating and system changes as our underwriting model evolves.
Responsibilities
- Support the Senior Manager, Underwriting in day-to-day case review – checking rating outputs, retier requests, and plan setups for accuracy against underwriting guidelines and carrier rules.
- Monitor the team's real-time KPI dashboards – concession volume, pipeline activation, retier approval rates, and exception trends – and flag items that need senior attention.
- Test rating and pricing updates in PRISM and Salesforce as the team rolls out new business rules, rate books, and formula changes, confirming outputs match expected results before go-live.
- Aid in the parity and QA review of underwriting decisions submitted by our outsourced underwriting vendor (OIP), identifying discrepancies and escalating unresolved issues.
- Maintain and update underwriting reference materials and SOP documentation as processes evolve.
- Partner with the Senior Manager, Underwriting on the ongoing build of underwriting analytics tools, including the UW Workbench and related reporting, providing subject-matter input from a day-to-day case perspective.
- Provide regular reporting and analysis on new business underwriting activity, including trend tracking and ad hoc requests from Benefits Management leadership.
- Perform medical plan setup and configuration work across carriers (Aetna, Anthem, Kaiser) as new business and renewal cycles require.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and the organization.
Requirements
- Existing familiarity with ExtensisHR's PRISM and/or Salesforce environment is a significant advantage – internal candidates from finance, operations, or benefits who already navigate these systems are strongly encouraged to apply, even without direct underwriting experience.
- 1-3 years of experience in underwriting, benefits administration, financial analysis, or operations. Group health, PEO, or carrier experience is a plus but not required for the right internal fit.
- Interest in or working knowledge of group health insurance plan designs and medical plan setup – or a demonstrated ability to learn how a plan is built quickly.
- Comfort working with data: you can navigate a dashboard, spot an outlier, and know when a number doesn't look right. Strong Excel skills are required.
- Excellent attention to detail – this role exists to catch what would otherwise slip through.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain a discrepancy or a recommendation clearly to both underwriting and non-underwriting audiences.
- A genuine interest in how underwriting decisions get made, with the aptitude to grow into more independent case review and analytics work over time.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience in benefits, underwriting, financial operations, or a related field.
Skills
- Deep underwriting background is not required on day one – familiarity with how our systems and data actually work matters more, and underwriting judgment will be built on the job under the Senior Manager's direction.
- Effective use and understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to enhance productivity, decision-making, and overall performance.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation to reward you for your hard work every day.
- Progressive Paid-Time Off Program for you to enjoy time out of the office, including time off for volunteering and life events.
- Group Medical, Dental, Vision and Life insurance to encourage a healthy lifestyle available from day one.
- Pretax Spending Accounts to ease taxes on health and dependent care expenses.
- 401k and IRA retirement plans, employer contributions.
- Employee Discounts on retail and entertainment.
- Social and community outreach committee that promotes a fun inclusive culture through in-office events and networking opportunities.
- Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (DEI) committee that promotes organization DEI initiatives and employee engagement.
- Complimentary coffee and snacks to keep you fueled and productive throughout the day.
Pay
