About the role
The Underground Shift Supervisor reports to the Mine General Foreman and the primary role is to be responsible for the supervision, leadership and direction of the Underground Mining Team within the Mining Services Department.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the daily management, control and supervision of the working areas of the underground mining operations in accordance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
- Ensure the Underground Miners understand written directions regarding mining operations and comply with the mining plan and underground designs provided by the Mining Engineers.
- Communicate the underground production strategy for achieving the agreed daily targets of the operation.
- Maintain close liaison with Geologists, Surveyors, Mining Engineers and Contractors to ensure mining activity is coordinated efficiently.
- Organize and manage the shift plan as required to meet daily production and cost targets.
- Organize and maintain underground production and status board for next shift and complete all relevant paperwork.
- Ensure personnel are adequately trained and qualified in relevant operating procedures.
- Actively contribute to site safety policy and new initiatives; implement related changes.
- Actively promote, monitor and enforce compliance by personnel with safe work practices.
- Ensure all incidents and accidents are reported, investigated and reviewed according to policy and procedure.
- Develop a culture of high performance and behaviors that are consistent with agreed values.
- Provide feedback on performance.
- Develop a succession plan for roles within the team.
- Work closely with the Mine Trainers to ensure competency assessment and development is ongoing to meet all targets.
- Undertake a full inspection of all working areas throughout the shift as required to ensure safe operations.
- Ensure pre-start checks and routine inspection checks are carried out.
- Undertake regular checks of mobile and fixed plant and equipment as required by the Mine General Foreman and record all results.
- Maintain an accurate and full account of all daily mining operations, including downtime, areas mined, problems, and incidents.
- Update production statistics on a daily basis to monitor production against targets.
- Maintain a record of all shift inspections and any work required or undertaken to ensure safe operations.
- Comply with and undertake additional/alternative responsibilities as reasonably requested by the Mine General Foreman or Project Manager.
- Prepare upgrade criteria for each non-exempt job classification, as well as any needed revisions, for manager’s approval.
- Provide and monitor training opportunities in an objective process; ensure that training opportunities are made available fairly, consistently and in a manner free from discriminatory bias.
- Review employees’ requests/applications for training based on objective evidence related to job performance, abilities and interest.
- Document employees’ readiness to train for tasks, noting any operational reasons related to the availability and scheduling of requested training.
- Maintain training records of employees in the department.
- Monitor training register and logging of formal training as it occurs.
- Participate in the review of any appeals filed by employees concerning training opportunities.
Qualifications
- Current Driver’s License.
- Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in the mining industry.
- Computer literacy - Microsoft Office, INX, etc.
- Good communication skills - written and verbal.
- Be able to pass a background check and post-offer physical.
Desired Experience & Competencies
- 2 or more years’ experience in supervisory or Lead role.
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and manage conflicting priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all mine production tasks.
- Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
- Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
